There is no unified standard for the replacement cycle of automotive transmission oil, which mainly depends on the type of transmission and the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer, and is also affected by driving conditions. The following are the regular replacement cycles and precautions for different types of transmissions:
1、 Reference for replacement cycle of different gearboxes
Manual transmission (MT) regular cycle: 60000 to 100000 kilometers or 4 to 6 years. Features: The manual transmission has a simple structure and relatively low loss of oil due to gear meshing. If frequent gear shifting occurs in congested urban road conditions for a long time, it can be shortened to 50000 to 60000 kilometers for replacement.
Conventional cycle of hydraulic automatic transmission (AT): 60000 to 80000 kilometers or 3 to 5 years. Characteristics: The AT gearbox relies on hydraulic oil to transmit power, and the oil will gradually oxidize and deteriorate with use, and may also mix with metal debris. If not replaced for a long time, it will cause gear shifting jerks and high oil temperature. Some manufacturers claim to be "maintenance free for life", but it is recommended to regularly check the oil condition after 100000 kilometers and replace it according to the actual situation.
Dual clutch transmission (DCT)
Wet dual clutch transmission (DCT): 40000 to 60000 kilometers or 2 to 4 years. The oil of wet dual clutch not only lubricates the gears, but also is responsible for clutch heat dissipation, resulting in faster wear and tear.
Dry dual clutch transmission (DCT): 60000 to 80000 kilometers or 3 to 5 years. Dry dual clutch has no oil cooling, and the oil is only used for gear lubrication, with a slightly longer cycle than wet type.
The regular cycle of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is 60000 to 80000 kilometers or 3 to 5 years. Characteristics: The CVT gearbox relies on steel belt transmission, which requires extremely high viscosity and lubrication performance of the oil. Oil deterioration can directly cause steel belt slippage and a decrease in transmission efficiency. It is not recommended to extend the replacement cycle.
2、 Special working conditions require a shorter replacement cycle
If the vehicle is in the following scenarios for a long time, it is recommended to shorten the transmission oil replacement cycle by about 30%:
Frequent start stop and low-speed driving on congested urban roads;
Long term full load and towing of heavy objects (such as RVs and trailers);
Driving in harsh environments with high temperatures, high altitudes, or high levels of dust.
3、 Key precautions
Prioritize following the manufacturer's manual: The design of different brand models varies greatly, for example, some German cars recommend replacing the AT gearbox at 80000 kilometers, while some Japanese cars recommend replacing it at 60000 kilometers. The requirements of the vehicle maintenance manual are the most authoritative basis.
Oil inspection: Even before the replacement cycle, the color and condition of the oil can be checked regularly - normal transmission oil is transparent or light yellow, without any odor; If the oil turns black, has a burnt smell, or shows emulsification, it needs to be replaced immediately.
Choose matching oil: Different transmissions require specialized oil (such as AT oil, CVT specialized oil, DCT specialized oil), and cannot be mixed, otherwise it will seriously damage the transmission.
